A straight comparison of the three ways to whiten your teeth — and how to choose the one that fits your smile, your schedule and your sensitivity.

The short answer: in-office whitening is the fastest — several shades lighter in about an hour. Custom take-home trays give an equally good result over one to two weeks and let you touch up later. Drugstore strips are the cheapest but the least even, and the most likely to irritate your gums. Whichever you choose, have a dental exam first, because whitening gel on an untreated cavity or a cracked filling hurts.
Whitening is the most-asked-about cosmetic treatment at our Santa Clara office, and the question is rarely "should I?" — it is "which way?" Here is how Dr. Sajid explains the options to patients.
A single appointment of about an hour. Your gums are isolated and protected, professional-strength gel is applied in cycles, and you leave noticeably lighter the same day.
We take impressions and make trays moulded to your teeth, so the gel stays on the enamel instead of leaking onto your gums the way a boil-and-bite tray does. You wear them a short time each day for one to two weeks.

Over-the-counter strips use a weaker gel and a one-size-fits-all strip. They can lift light surface staining, and for some people that is enough.
| In-office | Custom trays | Drugstore strips | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to result | About an hour | 1–2 weeks | Several weeks |
| Gum protection | Isolated by the dentist | Trays fitted to your teeth | None |
| Even on curved teeth | Yes | Yes | Often patchy |
| Exam beforehand | Yes | Yes | No |
| Touch-ups later | With trays | Reuse your trays | Buy again |
Whitening works only on natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings keep the shade they were made in — so a filling in a front tooth can stand out once the teeth around it are lighter. Deep internal staining from medication or an old injury responds poorly; veneers are usually the better answer there.
Order matters. If you are planning new crowns, veneers or fillings in your smile line, whiten first and match the new work to the new shade. Doing it the other way round means paying for restorations twice.
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of any whitening, and it fades within a day or two. Using a sensitive-teeth toothpaste for a week beforehand helps a great deal. If your teeth are already sensitive, trays are the gentler route because we can lower the strength and the wear time.
Most people want a touch-up after one to three years. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas and tobacco are the main reasons. Rinsing with water after them helps more than people expect, and a straw keeps dark drinks off the front teeth.
We offer both in-office whitening and custom take-home trays at our office at 2725 El Camino Real, and many patients book whitening alongside a cleaning so surface stain is removed first. Call (408) 241-4111 to ask which option suits you.
Thinking about whitening? Book a cleaning and exam first — we check for cavities and old fillings before any gel goes on.
